In 1993 while working in Boston in the frenetic financial
industry, I was drawn to a poster asking “Are you stressed out? Try
yoga!” That was the impetus that started me on my yoga journey. My first
class was in the Kundalini tradition; I left thinking, “if everyone
did yoga, we would have world peace”.
It took me several years to make yoga a daily commitment,
but with the stresses of my financial career and the physical abuses my
body suffered from mountain biking, I found myself gradually making space
in my life for this new practice.
In 1995, I was exposed to Ashtanga yoga and that quickly
became a substitute for mountain biking. My initial mind-set was that
it was an efficient means to achieve fitness and calm my nerves.
In my type “A” fashion, I wanted to learn more about
the roots of this system and followed the lineage to Krishnamacharya and
two of his popular students BKS Iyengar and Pattabhi Jois. I studied with
Pattabhi Jois in 2001 in New York and again in 2002 in Mysore, India.
I have also studied with senior Iyengar teachers.
In 2000, I began my studies with my principal teacher –
Richard Freeman. My approach reflects the core of Richard’s teachings
including: a focus on the internal and meditative qualities of the practice
to direct the student toward the “middle path”; and adherence to Iyengar
alignment principles with therapeutic adaptations of postures/sequencing
as needed.
In 2004, I moved myself and my business to Boulder, Colorado
to study with Richard directly at his studio. While in Boulder, I delved
into Buddhist, Zen and Vipassana meditation as well as continuing my inquiries
into the philosophies of yoga and Ayurveda. Tiring of the snow and missing
the ocean, I moved to Los Angeles in 2007, where I expanded my social
activites to include salsa and bachata dancing.
I currently reside in Albuquerque, New Mexico and am enrolled in the
ASP-1 program at the Ayurvedic Institute with Dr. Lad. I travel to Los
Angeles in the summer, on semester breaks, and as needed to meet with
clients. I am also availble via Skype for yoga instruction and consultations.
As a teacher, my goal is to transmit the essence of the ancient
wisdom of yoga and Ayurveda as I have learned from my teachers
and their teachers before them. I continually update my teachings by making
them applicable to the immediate condition of my student’s bodies, minds
and cultures.
